Our Mission Statement

If we respectfully hear each other out and work together rather than against each other, we will be able to tackle society's challenges with our full potential. We promote listening to everyone, including those with different or opposing opinions to our own. By doing this, we can merge the best parts of each side into a better solution. Let's fight against problems rather than against each other.

Why We’re Doing This

We believe in taking everyone's views into respectful consideration because, at our core, everyone wants the same things. We all want to feel safe, comfortable, have joy in our lives, and have our voice heard. We all have this, and so much else in common. Yet, many of us focus on our differences, thinking our beliefs on how to obtain these goals for ourselves, our loved ones, and our country are more valuable than others. On either hand of an argument, each side argues why the other side is wrong rather than respectfully trying to consider their view and hear them out. Choosing to argue rather than have a respectful conversation is one of the main driving factors for the massive division in our country. A heated and biased argument does not work to find a solution but to prove a point. What if we worked together to find a better answer solution than either side could come up with on their own? Then we could more efficiently make progress to fix the enormous problems that plague humanity. It is this idea of looking at an issue from perspectives other than our own so that we can see the whole picture that we work so hard to promote.

The Original Starfish Story

There was once an old man that lived in a house by the beach. Every morning after a storm would pass through, he would walk along the beach to see what had washed ashore. One day after a particularly mighty rainstorm, he went to walk across the beach to see what had washed up. He started to walk along the sand and noticed a figure in the distance moving back and forth from the shore to the water. He was curious, and he decided to investigate. As he got closer, he noticed that the beach surrounding the figure was covered entirely in starfish. There must have been thousands of them. He kept walking, and as he got closer, he realized that the mysterious figure was, in fact, a little girl. She was picking up the starfish one by one and running back and forth along the beach to throw them into the water. He was curious and wanted what she was doing. So he walked over to her and asked, “Little girl, what are you doing? There must be thousands of starfish on this beach you can’t possibly save them all. You can’t possibly make a difference.” It was then that the little girl looked him right in the eye and picked up a starfish. She ran to the water, threw it in the ocean, and said, “Well, it made a difference to that one.”

What we’re doing

You can help us in our effort to throw as many starfish as we can back into the ocean!

Support Starfish Stories by doing what you consider to be good for your community and, if you'd like, discussing your experience with others. You can also support our ideas by engaging in respectful conversation with people whose views differ from your own: every action, discussion, or starfish matters.

Additionally, you can see below to help our local efforts.

Currently, our main activity is working to promote recognizing the humanity and value of the homeless and providing them with the assistance they need to create and reach their goals. We volunteer with the Seattle's United Gospel MissionSearch and Rescue to distribute necessities and engage in conversation with the homeless to help them get back on track. You can donate to UGM to give people who are currently homeless necessities such as food, water, clothing, and sanitary products. We'll be handing out the products bought with your donations. If you find yourself in the Seattle area, you are welcome and encouraged to join us on Search and Rescues. You can apply to volunteer with UGM here.

However you choose to do good, reach out to us to tell us what you did, and we'll likely feature your actions on future social media.

We strive to promote, among other things, being reasonable, and we want to hear the reasons for your beliefs and how we can improve our ideas. And we want to listen to what you believe could be better about how and what we're doing! Contact us in the form to the right with your story, to help us get starfish back in the water. Your voice is valuable, and we want to hear it!
